Containers in Cork unaffected

The southern Irish Port of Cork has reported its results for 2020. Total traffic passing through the port was down by 2% to 9.2 million t, due to "the challenges posed by Covid-19 and the cancellation of cruise calls to Cork in particular", as the port said in a media release.

Yet, overall container traffic through the Port of Cork reached 250,000 teu, an uptick of 4%. The introduction of several new and direct container services by CLdN Ro-Ro and Independent Container Line (ICL) contributed to this success.

Other areas of port traffic, such as liquid bulk and break bulk decreased marginally. These areas are however set to return in 2021.

Bantry Bay Port Company, sister port to the Port of Cork, had a strong performance and reported a rise in total trade traffic to 1.3 million t in 2020. (cd)
