Coop reduces 58,000 truck journeys annually

Coop has officially opened a new railway hub in the heart of Zurich to supply over 70 stores in the city in an environmentally friendly and efficient way. The project shifts logistics from road to rail, reducing CO2 emissions by 80% compared to exclusive road transport and saving around 58,000 truck journeys each year in and around Zurich. Goods are transferred from the distribution centre in Schafisheim onto trains, which then deliver to Zurich, where environmentally friendly lorries are gradually introduced for final delivery.

This marks a significant milestone in sustainable logistics for Coop, supported by its own rail company, Railcare. The initiative enhances efficiency, avoids empty runs, and eases road traffic congestion, saving up to 8,100 hours of traffic jams annually. Sustainability has been a core part of Coop’s strategy for over 50 years, with the goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050.
