Covid-19's impact on the transport industry

In Switzerland, road haulage proved to be the most robust. The trucks' transport performance totalled 16.99 billion net tonne-kilometres in 2020, 0.9% less than in 2021. Railfreight's transport performance, on the other hand, decreased by 2.7% to 9.8 billion net tonnes, the level of 2012. .

In the Covid year, Rhine shipping saw a decline in volumes primarily due to the low demand for petroleum products. The Rhine ports in Basel handled 5.1 million t of goods in 2020, 15.5% down from 2019.

The biggest drop was recorded in the air freight sector, which however only plays a minor role in Switzerland in terms of volume. In 2020, aircraft transported 275,000 t of goods, 41% less than in the previous year. (ben)
