Crossing the Alps on LNG

The enormous boom in online trade, partly due to corona restrictions, has generated a growing demand for general cargo transports with smaller consignments and less weight than traditional complete loads.

In response, Fercam has expanded its Europe-wide network of general cargo services and launched its first scheduled groupage service from Italy to Germany deploying the new LNG powered Iveco articulated units, in addition to the already existing LNG trucks with complete loads.

In order to be able to also source bio-LNG (LNG derived from renewable fuels) in the future, "we made an important investment in Biogas Wipptal/Sterzing in South Tyrol last year. The company will start producing bio-LNG for road haulage as from June this year," said managing director Hannes Baumgartner.

"The first LNG powered articulated units are a first step towards sustainability in our scheduled European services, which currently offer 82 daily direct connections from Italy to destinations across Europe.“ (sh)
