CTT gearing up for more megaships
Three more gantry cranes have been ordered by Hamburger Hafen und Logistik (HHLA). The additional hoisting equipment is intended for handling the latest generation of mega-ships that call at HHLA’s Tollerort container terminal (CTT) in Hamburg.
In June 2015, CTT initially placed an order for two container gantry cranes which will begin operating at the terminal at the end of 2016. The contract with the company Liebherr includes an option for another three container gantry cranes of the same type, which has now been exercised by HHLA. The gantry cranes are expected to go into operation at Tollerort at the end of 2017. The terminal will then have five 20,000 teu gantry cranes.
All the cranes have a 74 m long jib, a lifting height of 51.5 m above the quay wall and can discharge and load two 20 foot containers simultaneously when operating in twin mode. They are designed for containerships with rows of boxes 24 across, and are ideal for 20,000 teu or more ships. Each gantry crane weighs 1,500 t and can handle a maximum payload of 63 t.
There was a jump in the number of calls by ultra large container vessels over the last year. In H1/2016, ships with a carrying capacity of at least 14,000 teu docked at the port of Hamburg 97 times – a rise of 83% compared with H1/2015.
