DAC demonstrator train comes to Austria

Extensive research and development operations are underway at the European level to prepare the digital automatic coupler (DAC) for serial production. The plan is to gradually replace all conventional screw couplers from 2026 to 2030.

According to the ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG), the "DAC demonstrator train" of the DAC4EU project will stop at four different Austrian stations by March 2022 and undertake an extensive test programme.

With DACs Europe wants to catch up on its technological backlog and herald the digitalisation of railfreight transport. Besides Europe, North Korea and North Africa are currently the only rail networks to use the inefficient screw coupler. (ben)
