                        De-registering the bad boys
The St Kitts & Nevis international ship register (Skan) has underlined its adherence to compliance. A current incident made the register repeat its warning that vessels flying its flag that engage in illegal activities face immediate de-registration.
A Skan-registered vessel was intercepted off the West African coast carrying 6 t of cocaine. The 4,400 dwt ‘Najlan’ was immediately de-registered as a result of the interception that exposed the illegal drugs haul.
Liam Ryan, international registrar of shipping and seamen and Skan CEO, saw this step as inevitable in order to "deter others thinking of using vessels registered with us for nefarious purposes.” (cd)
