East Midlands Airport announces cargo ambitions

East Midlands Airport (EMA) response to the government’s aviation 2050 green paper consultation, which alludes to the vital role airfreight plays in the UK’s economy (contributing around EUR 2.6 billion a year to UK Plc), is calling on the government to help unlock its potential by clearly setting out policies to solidify the airport’s position as a globally significant cargo hub.

"This would enable London to take a more active role in supporting the future sustainable development of air freight," said EMA MD Karen Smart. As well as being a short-haul gateway for leisure travel, EMA is also the UK’s most important airport for dedicated cargo flights.

It handles 1,000 t a day and facilitates approximately EUR 45 billion of trade to and from the EU and EUR 11 billion of non-EU imports and exports a year. (ah)
