Electric truck crosses the Channel
Kuehne+Nagel, P&O Ferries and Renault Trucks have reported that they have completed the first cross-Channel freight journey of a heavy-duty electric truck on a ferry across the English Channel.
The vehicle travelled from Dover to Calais aboard P&O’s hybrid ferry 'P&O Liberté', which cuts emissions by 40%, according to the manufacturer. The truck continued its journey to a Kuehne+Nagel depot in France before returning to the UK.
Unlike tunnels such as the Gotthard Tunnel in Switzerland, “where regulatory restrictions sometimes apply due to safety concerns with lithium-ion batteries,” ferries offer an alternative to transport electric vehicles, the company reported. The completion of the transport on the Dover–Calais route “highlights its potential as a green freight corridor for the future,” according to P&O Ferries. (js)
