Electronic consignment note passes last hurdle

The law on the electronic consignment note has passed the German Bundesrat (federal council). The so-called e-CMR Protocol of 20 February 2008 supplements the 1956 convention on the international carriage of goods by road (CMR). It stipulates that the consignment note, which previously had to be a paper document, can soon be issued electronically with legal effect.

With the law, Germany accedes to the protocol and enables its application. The German federal ministry of transport BMVI is now developing an open-source application with the Fraunhofer institute for material flow and logistics (IML) in Dortmund that focuses on the fully digitalised logistics chain, of which the electronic consignment note is a key component.
