Ema unveils major cargo growth plan
East Midlands airport (Ema) has revealed plans to unlock its full cargo potential, aiming to support up to 21,300 jobs by 2043. Four sites covering over 50 ha, including two freeport tax sites, are now open for development.
The blueprint foresees new taxiways, aircraft parking for 18 freighters, and over 120,000 sqm of warehousing. Express freight volumes are expected to grow by 54% over two decades. Ema’s location, 24/7 cargo operations and runway access make it the UK’s leading express airfreight hub.
Managing director Steve Griffiths said the airport is seeking development partners to expand capacity and meet rising demand. The growth could add GBP 3.9 billion to the UK economy. (ah)
