Emissions guideline for car carriers

Six leading ro-ro operators and the Japanese ship classification society ClassNK have launched the first industry-wide guidelines to calculate GHG emissions intensity in ro-ro shipping.

The guidelines, developed with the Smart Freight Centre, enable accurate scope 3 emissions reporting in multimodal automotive supply chains. Based on ISO 14083 and the GLEC framework, the method standardises calculations for car carriers, trailers and machinery vessels. This will reduce discrepancies in emissions reporting and support OEMs in meeting carbon disclosure obligations.

The group’s members include NYK, MOL, K Line, Wallenius Wilhelmsen and Eastern Car Liner, so it covers 80% of global auto transport capacities and aims to set a benchmark for end-to-end supply chain decarbonisation. (ah)
