Epea: Carbon balance at Levi’s site

The Levi Strauss & Co. European distribution center in Dorsten (Germany), developed by Delta Development, is set to achieve its climate neutrality target, according to the Environmental protection encouragement agency (Epea). According to the developpers the 73,000 m² facility is Germany’s first logistics building constructed under the cradle-to-cradle principle. It combines a photovoltaic system with battery storage and geothermal energy aiming to minimise emissions from both construction and operation.

Epea’s assessment, based on the 'operation and construction' framework, counts all emissions from building, renewal and demolition as well as energy use during the lifecycle. These are balanced by avoided emissions from exported renewable energy. Using the residual-mix method and the merit-order principle, the analysis concludes that construction-related emissions will be offset by 2046. The calculation excludes tenant electricity, as consumption varies and can only be measured during use. (js)
