EST to supply battery systems to Arklow
EST-Floattech has been selected to supply its Octopus Lite battery system for six new general freight vessels built by Ferus Smit in the Netherlands for Irish shipowner Arklow Shipping. The collaboration involved close work with the shipyard and Eekels Technology to tailor the system to each vessel's sailing profile, ensuring optimal performance. The 11,000 DWT vessels will utilise the battery systems for various onboard functions, including grid stabilisation, loading and unloading, powering the bow thruster for zero-emission port stays, and supporting electric operations.
The modular design allows capacity upgrades, ensuring the vessels remain future-proof. Delivery of the first vessel is scheduled for 2026, with the entire series expected to be completed by 2029. EST-Floattech's chief commercial officer, Walter van der Pennen, highlighted that their battery systems help reduce fuel consumption and emissions, aligning with industry trends towards more sustainable shipping, while supporting compliance with tightening regulations and technological advancements.
