EU rail decarbonisation partnership

Infrabel and the Association of European Rail Rolling Stock Lessors (AERRL) have launched phase two of a joint study on rail fleet decarbonisation. The project builds on a 2024 report supported by Crédit Agricole CIB, ING, KfW IPEX-Bank and Société Générale. In the new phase the companies explore alternatives to diesel traction, including hybrid systems and renewable fuels like HVO, ammonia and RNG.

Three use cases will be assessed: long-distance multi-voltage freight, shunting in port areas and short-haul national services. Infrabel will carry out a social cost-benefit analysis to support future investment and policy decisions. The study aims to guide the creation of a European net-zero rail roadmap, supporting EU green deal targets. (js)
