Europe's biggest cargo gateway feels sick in February

This is no surprise: In February 2020, Frankfurt airport, Europe's biggest air cargo hub, witnessed cargo throughput (airfreight + airmail) shrinking by 8% to 148,500 t.

The impact of the coronavirus, particularly towards the end of the month, far outweighed the positive effects of the extra leap day on these traffic categories. Cumulated cargo throughput so far (297,700 t) are 8.3% below 2019 figures.

As in previous months, the group airports in Fraport’s international portfolio reported mixed results, despite the leap day having a positive effect on traffic volumes across the group.

While volumes in Fortaleza (Brazil) and Lima (Peru) increased by 17.5 and 2.9%, reaching 6,600 and 18,200 t, China's Xi'an airport, in which the company holds a 24.5% stake, lost 17.1% and amounted to 12,700 t. (ah)
