First e-trains for India’s Northeast

Indian Railway (IR) is pushing ahead its plans to become net zero carbon emitter by 2030 at full throttle. In an endeavour to ensure complete electrification, IR’s affiliate Northeast Frontier Railway has achieved another milestone by commissioning two new electrified stretches with a total of 56 track km in northeast India.

Trains hauled by electric locomotive will now be able to operate directly in the state. This will increase the average speed and more freight carrying trains will be able to operate with full sectional speeds.

The electrification will also significantly improve the mobility of trains in Northeast India, the government said. In addition to reducing pollution due to the shift from fossil fuel to electricity, the upgrade will also make the railway system more efficient. (ben)
