New EU sustainability directives aim for net-zero CO₂ emissions, prompting the sector to reduce transport distances and shift freight to more climate-friendly modes, such as the inland waterways. Tools based on EN ISO 14083:2023 allow for detailed CO₂ tracking.
After route and mode optimisation, technologies such as alternative fuels or ETH Zurich’s solar-based 'sun-to-liquid' concept may come into play.
