Freight market under pressure

In parallel with decreasing growth rates in most other sectors of the German economy, freight traffic volumes in the road, rail and inland shipping segments achieved an increase of only about 0.4% in 2019 compared to the previous year, as the German federal office for freight transport (BAG) stated in its annual report.

With a plus of roughly 8.6%, inland shipping showed an above-average improvement. Railfreight volumes increased by around 2.2%, whereby cross-border traffic was the main driving factor. The road haulage segment saw its figures decline by roughly 1.2%.

Because of the corona pandemic, a severe downturn in the German freight transport sector is expected for 2020, impacting all modes of transport.
