From TC3 to own offices in Morocco

After focusing on its connections to East Africa in May 2021, Hapag-Lloyd is now enlarging its footprint in Morocco as well. The shipping company currently has three bases in the country: a head office in Casablanca and satellite offices in Tangier and Agadir.

In a press release, the carrier mentions the North African export trade as a motivation to establish its own presence: "As an important platform for the export of fresh produce, Morocco is part of Hapag-Lloyd's development strategy in the refrigerated container transport sector."

While the exports are minerals, chemicals, textiles and food products, imports consist mainly of electronics, spare parts and food products. The port of Tanger-Med is the key to this North African market. Hapag-Lloyd acquired a 10% stake in container terminal 3 (TC3) at the port of Tanger-Med 2 last year. (cd)
