From tug trainee to harbour master

In July Captain Vuyani Ntsimango was appointed harbour master of the hub in Port Elizabeth (South Africa).

Born and raised in Zwide, Gqeberha, Ntsimango began his career in 1999 as a cargo handler before serving in the South African Navy and later joining TNPA as a trainee tug master in 2008. Over 25 years he rose through the ranks as pilot and deputy harbour master.

His new role makes him the final authority on navigation, dredging and safe vessel movements within port limits, while ensuring timely provision of maritime services. According to acting port manager David Goliath, Ntsimango’s career path reflects TNPA's 'marine pipeline' programme, which develops future mariners through structured progression. He holds diplomas in maritime studies and business management, and is currently pursuing an International Harbour Masters qualification in London. (ah)
