Full freight boom in Basel

While the passenger business at Basel-Mulhouse Airport (EAP) showed a mixed performance in 2021, as expected (-60% compared to 2019), the bi-national airport's cargo business climbed to 119,300 t (2020: +10%, 2019: +12.3%).

As announced at the New Year's media conference yesterday, 26 January 2022, which was held purely online for the second year in a row, all sub-sectors reported gains in volume.

Flown airfreight increased by 14.5% to 73,800 t, of which full freight, thanks in part to the introduction of a twice-weekly Air Canada Cargo service to Toronto in April, described as a "milestone", amounted to 19,800 t (2020: +18.2%, 2019: +46.5%), and express cargo by 13.2% to 54,000 t. RFS volume (45,530 t) improved by 3.3%.

Qatar Airways Cargo is still the airport's largest full cargo line, while Turkish Cargo completes the current trio. Airport director Matthias Suhr told ITJ that he is in talks with other capacity providers. (ah)
