Gatwick airport pushes runway plans forward

A public consultation will start today, 9 September 2021, on plans to bring London Gatwick airport's (LGW) existing northern runway into routine use alongside its main runway, enabling dual runway operations.

The scheme aims to help secure LGW's long-term growth, generating approximately 18,400 additional jobs by 2038 and an additional expected GBP 1.5 billion (EUR 1.75 billion) GVA to the region.

While PAX numbers remain low due to the Covid-19 pandemic, UK's second busiest airport is taking its plans for growth forward now as it still expects to be capacity constrained in the time it would take to secure approvals, complete construction and start operations.

The proposed plans would allow the northern runway to be brought into routine use, for departing aircraft, by repositioning its centre line further north by 12 m. (ah)
