Giornico centre says ‘Buongiorno!’ to trucks

A new ‘Heavy Goods Vehicle Control Centre’ officially went into operation in Ticino, after the ceremonial opening event was held on Friday, 2 December 2022.

Built on the site of a disused steelworks, it complements a centre in Ripshausen in the canton of Uri, and is one of 13 centres the Swiss government is planning to set up nationwide to manage heavy goods traffic crossing the Alps. CHF 250 million was invested in this project on the A2 motorway.

The new centre was built on a 170,000 sqm area between Giornico and Bodio. The location at the foot of the access ramp to the Gotthard road tunnel is strategically ideal for checking HGVs. In future, the centre can be used to manage the flows of heavy goods traffic heading north, which should significantly alleviate current logistic, safety and environmental problems. (ah)
