Gothenburg celebrates all-time record for railfreight

Container freight from the whole of Sweden is being increasingly channelled to the port of Gothenburg by rail. In total, 456,000 teu were transported through the Swedish port by this mode of transport in 2019.

This represents an increase by 14% within a year and is the largest railfreight volume in the port's 400-year history. A great deal of long-distance freight for export comprises basic materials used in industry, such as steel, paper and timber.

The port has set the target of reducing its CO2 emissions throughout the whole of the Gothenburg region by 70% through to 2030. To achieve this goal, the ongoing transition from road to rail is vital, the port authority said. (ben)
