Gothenburg's smooth start in 2021

The first quarter of this year saw an increase in the trade flows through the Swedish Port of Gothenburg, in the container, ro-ro and new vehicle segments.

“The situation is now considerably more problematic than it was a year ago. Still, volumes at the Port of Gothenburg are on the rise,” said Elvir Dzanic, Gothenburg Port Authority CEO.

Container freight picked up in March. Overall, the volumes for Q1/2021 moved sidewards (204'000 teu) compared with Q1/2020, which was itself an unusually strong quarter.

With 141,000 ro-ro and vehicles units handled, intra-European flows to and from Gothenburg are up 3% compared with the same period in 2020. This is despite the post-Brexit downturn, which has seen volumes to and from UK fall by 11%.

73,000 new vehicles passed through the Port of Gothenburg, an increase of 9% on the first quarter of 2020. The fall in energy products, down by 12% compared to last year, can also be attributed to the impact of the current situation worldwide. (cd)
