Great plans for railfreight network

The Greek ministry of transport and the state-owned railway company Trainose are planning to expand the train infrastructure between Patras, Athens, Thessaloniki and the country's northern borders and thus develop Hellas into a major hub for freight traffic in southeast Europe.

As a first step, EUR 3.3 billion have been budgeted for the expansion of the railfreight network. The projects include the connection between Athens Airport and the ports of Rafina and Lavria in Attica, the completion of the Rio – Patras section as well as the construction of a rail line in the north of the country leading from Thessaloniki via Kavala to Toxotes.

There are also plans to link up the industrial region in Magnesia with the port of Volos and Nea Anchialos airport. (ben)
