Green light to upgrade Basel's rail access to NRLA

Efforts to improve the rail link between Karlsuhe and Basel and build a quadruple-track railway are making progress. Several sections have already been completed.

Now Switzerland has awarded the construction permit for the southernmost part of the route: the 3.1 km CHF 260 million section which leads from the northern bank of the Rhine in Basel (Switzerland) via the Badischer Bahnhof (German railway station) to the Swiss-German border.

The construction of the quadruple-track railway finalises another important project in the plan to improve the access routes to the new rail link through the Alps (NRLA).

This part of the quadruple track is scheduled to come into service in 2027. However, the extension of the entire stretch between Karlsruhe and Basel is likely to take until 2040. (ben)
