Gulf of Mexico port coping better than West Coast hub
While the port of Los Angeles dramatically lost container volumes in May, Port Houston continued its upward trend in May 2025, handling 381,640 teu – a 5% year-on-year increase.
Total volumes for the first five months climbed to 1.84 million teu, up by 4% compared to 2024. General cargo rose by 12% and steel imports by 11%, while total tonnage reached 22.9 million t, up by 2%.
To support ongoing growth, Port Houston has expanded its 'Express Pass' truck appointment system and introduced a cloud-based 'Execution and Visibility Platform' (EVP) offering customers real-time data.
"This transparency will allow our clients to make better data-driven decisions," said CEO Charlie Jenkins. The final phase of the 'Project 11' ship channel expansion is also nearing completion, aiming to boost long-term resilience and capacity. (ah)
