Handling two car carriers at new berth
The Port of East London (South Africa) achieved a major milestone three weeks ago, on 25 April 2025, with the simultaneous docking of two pure car carriers – the "MV Silver Sun" and "MV Martorell Ace" – at its newly deepened West Quay berth.
The upgraded quay, now 550 m long and dredged to a depth of –10.7 m, allows for next-generation vessels over 200 m and doubles the automotive berth’s capacity to 790,000 units per year. This marks a critical step in Transnet National Ports Authority’s infrastructure programme and positions East London as a strategic gateway for automotive exports.
Transent National Ports Authority (TNPA) says the port will continue working closely with terminal operators and industry partners to ensure fit-for-purpose facilities and support South Africa’s automotive logistics. The operational success reflects TNPA’s commitment to boosting efficiency, enabling volume recovery and strengthening the national port system. (ah)
