Heavier trains in the West

Australia is boosting railfreight in the West: The NSW government is investing more than AUD 24 million (EUR 15.6 million) into upgrading 96 km of rail line between Gilgandra and Coonamble to help increase freight loads and lower costs.

The rail line will be upgraded to a 25 t axle load, to allow access for heavier trains and increase the total amount of produce that can be transported through the region from the current 84 t gross weight limit to 100 t per wagon.

The rail line services a large cereal and grain producing region as well as bulk exports markets via Port Kembla and Newcastle. Upgrade work between Gilgandra and Coonamble is expected to start in mid 2023, weather and material supply permitting. (ben)
