Higher tolls as incentive for modal shift

In Switzerland, Euro IV and Euro V trucks will be lifted from the medium to the highest level of the performance related heavy vehicle charge (LSVA) as from 1 January 2021.

By raising road tolls for these HGVs, the Swiss federal council hopes to increase the incentive to shift cargo off the roads and ensure that carriers continue to renew their truck fleets.

The Swiss government recently presented the toll changes to the mixed inland transport committee that includes delegates from Switzerland and the EU.

Over the last few years, the differentiated LSVA rates have resulted in a rapid renewal and upgrade of truck fleets. As this adjustment shows, the federal council intends to consistently continue its modal shift policy. (ben)
