Hydrogen-powered trains for bulk freight

Railfreight operator Aurizon and mining company Anglo American have entered into an agreement to conduct a feasibility study to explore the use of hydrogen fuel cell and battery hybrid power train units in heavy haul railfreight operations in Queensland, Australia.

The study will focus on the potential deployment of hydrogen power technology on Aurizon’s Moura rail corridor between the Dawson metallurgical coal mine and the Gladstone Port, as well as the Mount Isa rail corridor between the North West Minerals Province and Townsville Port.

If the feasibility study is successful, the two companies intend as next step to jointly develop a hydrogen fuelled heavy haul locomotive prototype. (ben)
