Iata – cargo volumes to stay above pre-covid levels

The International Air Transport Association (Iata) expects that next year, airlines will collectively post a small net profit of USD 4.7 billion – a 0.6% net profit margin. This would be the first profit since 2019, when industry net profits were USD 26.4 billion (3.1% net profit margin). In 2022, airline net losses are expected to come to USD 6.9 billion (June outlook: USD –9.7 billion; 2021: USD –42 billion; 2020: USD –137.7 billion).

Air cargo revenues played a key role in cutting losses, with revenues expected to reach USD 201 billion. That’s an improvement compared with the June forecast, largely unchanged from 2021, and more than double the USD 100 billion earned in 2019.
2023 cargo revenues are expected to be USD 149 billion and volumes to decrease to 57.7 million t, from a peak of 65.6 million t in 2021. (ah)
