India revises inland navigation law

The ship classification society Indian Register of Shipping (IRClass) helped draft the inland vessels bill which was recently passed by the Indian parliament.

The inland vessels act 2021 repeals the earlier inland vessels act 1917, which required major revisions, and is considered by market experts to be a landmark.

The Indian inland vessels bill was introduced in Lok Sabha on July 2021. It provides a new national framework and ensures the uniform applicability of rules and regulations.

The IR Class assisted in preparing the draft IV bill and, along with IWAI and the ministry of shipping, took part in several broad-based consultations with all stakeholders including several ministries, government organisations, state governments, maritime boards as well as industry participants.
