Industry fights transit bans

Germany’s federal association for road haulage, logistics and disposal (BGL) has joined forces with other European associations to oppose the ban prohibiting truck transit on Friday afternoons on the Tauern motorway.

According to the BGL, this regulation, which Austria introduced at the end of January this year, prevents many vehicles from reaching their home base in time before the weekend, which means drivers have to spend their weekend in trucks.

The prohibition applies to the section between Salzburg and Villach in Austria, an important north-south axis. In a letter, the associations are now calling on the EU to take action against this new measure. It follows the driving bans and block clearance rules that were imposed on freight traffic on the Brenner route several years ago. (ben)
