International trio for green energy

In a declaration of intent released during COP26 in Glasgow, the ports of Antwerp and Zeebrugge and the Chilean ministry of energy have announced plans to transport green hydrogen between Chile and Western Europe. The package of measures includes the production of green hydrogen, the expansion of the logistics chain between the continents and between the Belgian seaports and their hinterland.

Already today, hydrogen molecules such as methanol are transported from the port of Antwerp to Germany's industrial clusters via ship and rail links. Belgium will also have to import green hydrogen, methanol and ammonia to cover its needs.

The port of Antwerp's goal is to become the main hub for green energy in northwestern Europe to meet the latter's requirements for fuel and raw materials. (sh)
