Ireland invests in rail future
End-to-end service provider Jacobs has been appointed to support Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail) as part of a infrastructure programme to modernise and expand the Galway–Portarlington line. The 140 km route links the Western region with Dublin and is part of the 'All Island Strategic Rail Review'. Jacobs will deliver pre-feasibility, feasibility and preferred option phases, assessing track upgrades, decarbonisation and service improvements. The framework spans four years with an optional four-year extension.
Irish Rail CEO Jim Meade said the study is key to improving rail access and supporting climate goals. Jacobs EVP Keith Lawson emphasised the project’s complexity and its integrated transport and planning approach. The work is funded under Project Ireland 2040 and forms part of the National Development Plan 2018–2027. (js)
