Irish medtech now to be transported by rail

Baxter has started to ship products by rail via the Irish Rail freight facility at Ballina, 40 km from its Castlebar site in Ireland. A number of containers containing lifesaving medical products departed for destinations in mainland Europe, the Nordic countries and Turkey.

This project was made possible thanks to a close partnership with Irish Rail, XPO Logistics and Brian Cunningham Transport, which opened the route for rail shipments from Ballina to Waterford port, the medtech company said.

The development of an inland railfreight hub at Castlebar and the reopening of the Western rail corridor are key infrastructures enabling the industry to support this drive to sustainability, Baxter added. (ben)
