Irish Rail renewing freight fleet

Iarnród Éireann (Irish Rail) has signed a framework agreement with UK-based manufacturer W.H. Davis for the supply of up to 400 freight wagons over a ten-year term. An initial order for 150 wagons worth approximately EUR 44 million will replace ageing rolling stock nearing 50 years of service. Production will take place in Nottinghamshire, with the first wagons due in 2026 and operational rollout expected in 2027.

The new wagons will offer a payload of up to 65 t, 33 % more than current units, and a maximum speed of 110 km/h. According to the company future supply of 250 wagons could raise weekly freight services to over 100. A key element of Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail's strategy is the rail link to Foynes Port, expected to reopen in spring 2026. (js)
