Irish train service for containers

The Irish Railway Iarnrod Eireann and XPO Logistics are starting a twice weekly railfreight service in Ireland. As from the end of June 2022, the new train will connect Ballina County Mayo and Waterford Port, offering a greener and more efficient mode of transporting freight between the West and Southeast of Ireland.

The container service will shift over 5,000 truck movements a year from road to rail, with a 75% reduction in emissions per unit. It will complement existing rail transports of pulpwood from Ballina and Westport to Waterford.

The new offer will be launched as Iarnrod Eireann finalises its national strategy to significantly expand railfreight operations. (ben)
