IRS hosts seminar on sustainable ship recycling
The Indian Register of Shipping (IRS) held a high-level seminar in Bhavnagar to prepare the domestic recycling sector for the entry into force of the Hong Kong Convention this June. Titled "Sustainable Ship Recycling: Charting India’s Course to Global Leadership", the event brought together representatives from the Gujarat Maritime Board, Gujarat Pollution Control Board, SRIA and local yards.
Key topics included regulatory readiness, infrastructure upgrades, and future challenges such as the safe dismantling of ships using alternative fuels. IRS stressed the importance of collaboration and capacity building, with IRClass Academy set to train workers in safe, environmentally sound practices. Joint MD T. K. Sahu called the initiative a shared responsibility and key to India’s global leadership in ship recycling. (ah)
