IRU: Euro 7 rules need to be pragmatic

The European Commission is proposing new Euro 7 standards to reduce pollutant emissions from vehicles. The International Road Transport Union (IRU) cautiously welcomes the proposal.

With CO2 standards for heavy-duty vehicles also on their way, road transport operators are keen to see that their path to carbon neutrality includes several decarbonisation options. The combustion engine also needs to remain an option.

However, IRU is concerned that the stringency of the norms in the Euro 7 proposal may in some cases require vehicles to be completely reengineered. It also criticises the inclusion of tyres and brakes in the proposal. IRU now urges the commission to clarify the Euro 7 rules and make them more pragmatic. (ben)
