IRU surveys decarbonisation

The IRU's recently released 'green compact' survey highlights the barriers road transport operators face in meeting decarbonisation goals.

More than 70% of companies globally, and over 80% in Europe, expressed concern about decarbonisation. The survey covered operators in Australia, Central Asia, Europe, Mexico and Turkey, with SMEs making up 86% of respondents. High vehicle and energy costs, limited charging and limited willingness by consumers to cover these costs were cited as amongst the main obstacles.

IRU secretary general Umberto de Pretto said operators are committed to carbon neutrality but struggle to reconcile expectations with costs and infrastructure shortages. "Without the right enabling conditions, millions of road transport operators around the world will not be able to buy or run vehicles powered by alternative fuels," he closed. (js)
