Is DB Cargo facing radical restructuring?
The Deutsche Bahn (DB) is considering how to make its loss-making subsidiary DB Cargo profitable again, the logistics consultancy HDS reports, referring to information from the news agency Reuters. According to the report, the group is mulling over radical austerity measures which would mean closing half of the cargo handling stations.
In this scenario, the Deutsche Bahn would withdraw practically all its railfreight business from north-east Germany. The review is said to focus on changes in wagonload traffic, whereby single wagons would be shunted to be combined to form longer trains. Wagonload traffic is the segment that is blamed for a large part of DB Cargo’s losses. (ben)
