Iumi targets sexual misconduct
At the annual conference of the International Union of Marine Insurance (Iumi) in Singapore, delegates were told that marine insurers must play an active role in eradicating sexual misconduct. Charles Fernandez, chair of the Iumi legal and liability committee, said the sector should recognise its responsibility as part of the maritime supply chain to raise awareness and support change.
Women represent just 1% of the seafaring workforce, yet surveys show 25% have experienced physical or sexual assault, with cases going unreported due to fears over reputation or career impact. Legal complexity, with jurisdiction varying between flag states and locations, further deters victims from pursuing justice.
Shipowners can be held liable if they fail to provide safe working environments, particularly when prior misconduct is known. According to Iumi recent cases have led to significant compensation paid by liability insurers, underscoring the sector’s role in addressing the issue. (js)
