Joint effort to halve emissions

VR Transpoint and SSAB have signed a contract on rail transport services for raw materials and other products. The aim is to halve emissions in the transport of steel coils and iron ore pellets covered by this cooperation by 2024. Most of the iron ore pellets come from Sweden but significant quantities also reach SSAB Raahe by rail from Russia.

Under the contract, VR Transport and SSAB will plan new rolling stock for railfreight to increase cargo capacity. The companies collaborated earlier to develop the largest freight train in Finland, the 690 m long and 5,200 t megatrain, and the so-called mammoth truck for road logistics.

VR Transpoint and SSAB also work closely on the safety front to create an accident-free working environment for their staff. (ben)
