K Line extends its bulk carrier fleet

K Line is building up its capacities in the bulk carrier segment. At the Marugame business headquarters Imabari Shipbuilding, the 200,000-dwt Capesize bulker "Cape discovery" has been completed. The ship is equipped with an electronically controlled engine and, in order to save energy, is has been furnished with WAD (weather adapted duct) in front of the propeller and a hybrid fin behind the propeller.

Furthermore, for complying with the IMO2020 regulation which comes into effect from January 2020, the vessel is equipped with a scrubber on the funnel to remove sulphur oxides from the gas discharged from the engine. The carrier's overall length will be almost 300 m, its width 50 m and it will sail under the Liberian flag. Moreover, the Japanese carrier announced that is has concluded a construction contract with Japan Marine United Corporation for a 210,000-dwt bulk carrier to be completed in the 2021 fiscal year.

After delivery from the yard, this vessel will start its next voyage as per contract signed with JFE Steel and will be engaged in iron ore and coal transportation. This vessel complies with the EEDI (Energy Efficiency Design Index), which is a GHG (Greenhouse Gas) emission regulation, taking account of the Phase 2 level applied to contracted vessels after 2020. The ship’s technical details are almost identical to the "Cape Discovery". (fd)
