Kansas to upgrade short line railroad network

Kansas has awarded nearly USD 5 million to nine US short line rail maintenance and rehabilitation projects in the state. Six recipients will use the funds for major track rehabilitation and rail replacement; three projects were awarded funds for siding extensions and storage tracks.

These projects support rail enhancements to expand carload capabilities, reduce truck traffic, increase operating speeds, and improve operating efficiencies.

State funding was awarded inter alia to Garden City Western Railroad, Kansas-Oklahoma Railroad, South Kansas & Oklahoma Railroad and V&S Railway.

Once completed, the nine supported rail improvement projects will strengthen Kansas’ agriculture supply chain, connecting farmers and ranchers to regional, national, and international markets, the Kansas government said. (ben)
