Key safety measures towards zero accidents

The US railfreight industry has announced a set of steps it is taking in its drive towards a future without incidents and injuries. It aims to ensure that accidents like the collision and derailment of a BSNF fuel train in East Palestine (Texas) last month never happen again.

As one main measure, the industry is installing 1,000 new hot bearing detectors (HBDs), expand support for first responders and initiate actions based on preliminary NTSB advisory (national transportations safety board), the American Railroad Association (AAR) said.

All Class I railroads are immediately beginning to install additional HBDs across their key routes, with the goal of achieving average spacing of 24 km. (ben)
